Open palm technique in Dupuytren’s disease treatment

Dupuytren

New paper just published in Brazilian Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery:

Open palm technique in Dupuytren’s disease treatment.

Abstract.

Objective: To evaluate the results of the open palm technique for the treatment of Dupuytren’s disease. Method: The authors used the technique described by McCash. Twelve patients (13 hands) were surgically treated, between october 2002 and september 2011. Results: The wounds healed in a medium of 25 days (variation of 17 to 30 days). There were no complications, such as infection, haematoma formation, skin necrosis, residual edema. Conclusion: The open palm technique remains a safe alternative for the treatment of Dupuytren’s disease, with satisfactory results and low risk of complications.

Rare weight lifting injury required surgery

WASHINGTON — A young, healthy man injured himself so severely while weight lifting that he required surgery and nearly a full week in the hospital to recover. The unusual case report of compartment syndrome to the shoulder will be reported online today in Annals of Emergency Medicine ("An Unusual Complication of Weightlifting: A Case Report").
"Typically, compartment syndrome is associated with the lower extremities, not the shoulder, and with trauma, not exercise," said lead study author Leonard Bunting, MD, FACEP, of Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. "Our patient over-exerted himself so much by weight lifting that he put himself in danger of suffering permanent damage. This is a case where doing something theoretically healthy—weight training—actually caused serious injury."
A 23-year-old male came to the emergency department with extreme pain and swelling in his shoulder. He reported having lifted heavier weights than usual the day before. Surgery and aggressive inpatient treatment with intravenous fluids for six days provided complete relief of pain and recovery of a full range of motion.
"Apart from being an unusual complication of weight lifting, this case highlights the unique aspects of bedside ultrasound in evaluation of unusual musculoskeletal conditions," said Dr. Bunting. "The patient's pain was out of proportion to the injury, and a bedside ultrasound exam confirmed muscle edema. The compartment pressures in the injured muscle were incredibly high. Fortunately, he received prompt treatment and went back to the gym a little wiser for the experience."

Update on ICRS 2013 IZMIR - Turkey - The congress will be hold as planned

Dear colleagues & friends

I am writing to update you on our plans for the upcoming World Congress in Izmir - Turkey.

The ICRS General Board has now met to consider all the information available to us including local information from Izmir, feedback from members (through our on-line poll) and sponsors, legal and financial advice and a review of advice from national governments regarding travel to Turkey.

On the basis of all of this information the Board has voted unanimously to go ahead with the World Congress in Izmir in September, as we have every confidence that the delegates will be able to have a safe and enjoyable meeting.

Since taking our decision, I have also had a telephone conversation with the Mayor of Izmir, who has given me his personal review of the local situation and his reassurance that our delegates will have a peaceful and enjoyable meeting.

We now urge all of you to register for the meeting for the highly reduced congress fees as soon as possible so that we can progress with organizing the event. Please also book your hotel accommodation in one of the official ICRS Hotels at your earliest convenience. You find the hotel booking links on our website: www.cartilage.org

In view of this very special situation, we are extending the early-bird registration deadline to 8th July 2013 at noon CEST (Central European Time) . Please note also that in the unlikely event that we have to cancel the Congress al a later stage we will reimburse participants registration fees.
With best wishes,

Anthony Hollander, ICRS President

HAMSTRING INJURY PREVENTION

http://www.convention-center.net/artroscopia2013/

HAMSTRING INJURY PREVENTION

Injuries are bound to happen. It’s the nature of sport. You push your body until your body pushes back. In sport, the hamstring muscles undergo major forces during sprinting, jumping, kicking, etc. Soccer is no exception to this. Many studies have targeted this issue and have tried to pin point how to reduce injury rate and injury recurrence in elite soccer athletes. Much of this research has looked at strength training, specifically developing eccentric hamstring strength, as a means to do this.
This study looks at the relationship between muscle injury and unilateral strength deficiencies. Could normalization of strength imbalances reduce the incidence of hamstring injuries?......

The effect of results, location and competition on soccer injuries

                  http://www.convention-center.net/artroscopia2013/

The effect of results, location and competition on soccer injuries

Soccer fans might know some of the factors that play a large part on injuries in the sport. We know that tackling causes about half of the injuries that occur in matches. Fouls and dirty play cause more than 10% of injuries. And rates of injuries increase dramatically when teams play more than one match per week.

Now there is evidence that the location of the match, the result (win, loss or draw), and the level of competition affect injuries as well.

A study recently published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine provides some fascinating data on those factors in European professional soccer. Hakar Bengtsson and colleagues collected information on matches and injuries from 26 professional clubs in 10 countries over 9 seasons. They analyzed the 2738 injuries that occurred in the 6010 matches and made some observations on those injuries.

How Effective are Exercise-Based Injury Prevention Programmes for Soccer Players?

How Effective are Exercise-Based Injury Prevention Programmes for Soccer Players?

Abstract

Background

The incidence of soccer (football) injuries is among the highest in sports. Despite this high rate, insufficient evidence is available on the efficacy of preventive training programmes on injury incidence.

Objective

To systematically study the evidence on preventive exercise-based training programmes to reduce the incidence of injuries in soccer.

Data sources

The databases EMBASE/MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of controlled trials, PEDro and SPORTDiscus™ were searched for relevant articles, from inception until 20 December 2011. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the PEDro scale.

Study selection

The inclusion criteria for this review were (1) randomized controlled trials or controlled clinical trials; (2) primary outcome of the study is the number of soccer injuries and/or injury incidence; (3) intervention focusing on a preventive training programme, including a set of exercises aimed at improving strength, coordination, flexibility or agility; and (4) study sample of soccer players (no restrictions as to level of play, age or sex). The exclusion criteria were: (1) the article was not available as full text; (2) the article was not published in English, German or Dutch; and (3) the trial and/or training programme relates only to specific injuries and/or specific joints. To compare the effects of the different interventions, we calculated the incidence risk ratio (IRR) for each study.

Results

Six studies involving a total of 6,099 participants met the inclusion criteria. The results of the included studies were contradictory. Two of the six studies (one of high and one of moderate quality) reported a statistical significant reduction in terms of their primary outcome, i.e. injuries overall. Four of the six studies described an overall preventive effect (IRR<1), although the effect of one study was not statistically significant. The three studies that described a significant preventive effect were of high, moderate and low quality.

Conclusions

Conflicting evidence has been found for the effectiveness of exercise-based programmes to prevent soccer injuries. Some reasons for the contradictory findings could be different study samples (in terms of sex and soccer type) in the included studies, differences between the intervention programmes implemented (in terms of content, training frequency and duration) and compliance with the programme. High-quality studies investigating the best type and intensity of exercises in a generic training programme are needed to reduce the incidence of injuries in soccer effectively.
